Bryan Cowling

Dr Bryan Cowling is the Executive Director of the Anglican Education Commission. He began his teaching career in Green Valley in 1967. After teaching English and History in several government schools in western Sydney, Bryan became state History Consultant, an inspector of schools, regional director of education, Director of Curriculum and Educational Programs, Director of Vocational Education and Director of School Education Policy. In 1999 he resigned from the Department of Education and Training to become the founding principal of Thomas Hassall Anglican College in Middleton Grange, a position he held until March 2007.

Bryan's doctorate was related to outcomes-based education. He has a passion for school improvement, effective teacher development, local history and looking in old graveyards. He is married to Megan and they have four adult children and one grandson.

Grant Maple

After serving the Diocese as the full-time Executive Director of Education, Grant has taken up the part-time position of Director of Advocacy and Representation in the Anglican Education Commission. He has taught in a number of Anglican and state schools and is currently chair of the NSW Inter-Church Commission on Religious Education in Schools, co-editor of the Journal of Christian Education and a member of the Sydney Anglican Schools Corporation. He has worked as a consultant with schools in developing strategic directions and in reviewing their Christian ethos and teaching programs.

His research interests have been in Australian religious history and educational policy. He is writing a biography of Frederic Barker, the second Anglican Bishop of Sydney.

John Scott

John has taught in a number of schools, including in the UK, and was Headmaster of Peninsula Grammar School, Warriewood, and then St Luke’s Grammar School, Dee Why. During his time at St Luke’s the school doubled in size, introduced Middle Schooling, and completed a very large-scale building program.

John currently works part time for the Anglican Education Commission, developing teacher education programs for the Diocese, and is also a member of the Independent Schools Capital Grants Committee, a committee of the Association of Independent Schools. This committee deals with applications from Independent schools in New South Wales for funding for capital grants from the Commonwealth Government.

John is married with three adult children, all of whom have become teachers.

Ian Keast

Ian has been Director of Christians in Teaching since mid 2004, seeking to encourage Christians to enter the teaching profession in all types of schools, State and Independent.

He was a teacher for more than 30 years, in both State and Independent systems, in city and country areas. His subject field was English and he was Head of Department in three schools, including fifteen years at Barker College. He has a particular interest in creative expression , and is a published poet.

Ian has seen the significant influence that Christian teachers can have on students at this key stage of their lives, including from his own experience, both as a student and as a teacher.

He is married with four adult children and two grandchildren.

Alison Wheldon

Alison Wheldon

Alison has held both classroom teaching and executive positions in a variety of school systems throughout her career. She has taught in the state system, and at Wycliffe Christian School and Richard Johnson Anglican School (where she was Head of Primary).

Alison has been a presenter at a number of educational conferences and holds a Diploma of Teaching with Distinction as well as a Master's degree specialising in Christian Education and leadership. She is keen to support Christian educators in their efforts to present the gospel using best educational practice, as part of her commitment to help teachers continue their professional development.

Alison is married with two adult daughters.
