Until the end of 2006, the Anglican Education Commission was part of the Anglican Youth and Education Division, and was governed by the Youthworks Council, which is chaired by the Rt Rev Dr Glenn Davies, Bishop of North Sydney.
In October 2006, the Synod received and debated a report on the training and recruitment of teachers in our Anglican schools. The Synod noted and endorsed the recent initiatives in relation to teacher recruitment and teacher education, and endorsed the setting up of the Commission as a separate entity under its own Ordinance. From 1 January 2007 the Anglican Education Commission has been constituted under its own Ordinance to look after advocacy and representation, teacher recruitment and teacher education.
The membership of the Commission comprises
- Three persons appointed by the Archbishop
- Six persons elected by Synod
- One person appointed by the Sydney Anglican Schools Corporation
- One person appointed by the Moore Theological College Council
- One person elected by the Commission.

- Mrs Judith Poole (Headmistress, Abbotsleigh)
- Dr Timothy Wright (Headmaster, Shore School)
The members of the Commission elected by Synod are as follows:
- Dr Michael Anderson (Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Education and Social Work, University of Sydney)
- The Rev Vanessa Bennett (Chaplain, Meriden)
- Mr Garry Brown (Headmaster, Mosman Preparatory School)
- Mrs Dianne Bryant (Head of Junior School, The Illawarra Grammar School)
- Prof Trevor Cairney (Master, New College and Adjunct Professor of Education, UNSW)
- Mr Ian Wing (Principal, Nirimba Senior College)
The person appointed by the Sydney Anglican Schools Corporation is:
- Dr Laurie Scandrett (CEO, Sydney Anglican Schools Corporation)
The person appointed by the Moore Theological College Council is:
- The Rev Dr Colin Bale (Lecturer, Moore Theological College)
The remaining position on the Commission is yet to be filled.
